La Bohème (1896) is considered one of his best works as well as one of the most romantic operas ever composed. It is arguably today's most popular opera. It is set in the Paris of about 1840, which particular flavor of the romantic is especially is somewhat distinct from heavier romanticism is it is tempered it realistic hardships of poverty, weather, illness, and especially love, suffered by youthful artists.

Bjorling is superb. Tebaldi good, but not on a par with Elizabeth Rethberg, who sang with supreme taste and artistry.

I wonder what television show this was originally on? Laughton's intro is charming.
