Gustav Mahler (1860-1911),
Was one the last great Romantic composers, and one of the last musical giants whose careers mostly centered in Vienna, although he also conducted at the Metropolitan Opera near the end of his life.
He works can be considered to be delve deep into philisophical contemplation as well.
His symphonies are monumental, but they often quote the very great cycle "Knaben Wunderhorn" wherein one can experience the essence of Mahler.
"Urlicht" is such an example.
"Das Lied von Der Erde" based on Chinese poetic philosophy is also highly regarded.
The earler cycle, Lieder Eines Fahrenden Gesellen - Songs of a Wayfarer(1883-5) is simple by comparison, but is also widely performed, and is effective with piano accompaniment, whereas the cycles above require the very lush and inventive full Orchestrtion provided by the composer.
In all of these works the understanding of the text is crucial.
