Label : RECMUSICClaude Debussy (1862-1918), along with Ravel, are at the heart of French impressionism in music. Debussy in particular tried to turn his back usages of the 19th century and all German influence and create entirely French idioms. His one major Opera "Pellius et Mellisand" is often performed and is revered by some while leaving others pretty cold. Of course that could be said about most works of art and music, but I feel is applicabe here in heightened degree. The aria here is from a much less important minor work.
As I don't know anything about Bilitis except what we have here (which seems very fine) I will leave it to others fo supply a short bit of research.
